    Abstract

Greenland is the largest island in the world with a surface area of 2 186 000 km2 about 80 per cent of which is covered by the Inland Ice. The ice-free marginal mountainous rim of well-exposed bedrock is up to 250 km broad and the highest peak is 3733 m. The major units of the geological column in Greenland can be matched with rocks of similar age and lithology in North America and northern Europe, and their character and distribution are consistent with the idea that Greenland represents a fragment of a single North Atlantic land mass.
