Petrophysical measurements on a regional rock samples collection from Disko and Nuussuaq

Abstract

This report describes the results from petrophysical measurements on a regional compilation of 33 rock samples from Northern Disko Island and the Nuussuaq Peninsula. This work was motivated by the outcome of a precursory combined mineralogical and petrophysical study from GEUS (Lode et al. 2021) on core samples from a borehole (FB94-4-5, see Olshefsky et al. 1995) nearby the abandoned village Qullissat on Northern Disko, where a magmatic lava flow contaminated with carbonaceous sediments was intersected. In this earlier study, graphite, native iron, and different sulfides were found in the lava flow, which is assigned to the Asuk Member from the Vaigat Fm (Pedersen et al 2017, 2018), and complex relationships between mineralogy and magnetic and electric properties were observed. BlueJay Mining PLC, the license holding company of this area, has been interested in these results to generally understand of the origin of observed geophysical anomalies (electromagnetic and magnetic; Olshefsky & Jerome 1993, Data et al. 2005, Heincke et al. 2020) and to distinguish anomalies that indicate potential Ni-Cu-PGE mineralization from anomalies that are linked to components of no or less exploration interest. To generalize the results from this local study such that they are applicable to other targets areas in their exploration licenses, BlueJay Mining contracted GEUS to extend the petrophysical investigations to a regional rock sample compilation.

In this study magnetic, electric, and seismic properties were determined together with the density, mass, and volume for samples of this regional compilation. In addition, core descriptions were prepared for all samples. The petrophysical measurements were financed by BlueJay Mining as part of a contracting work.

It is recommended that the work will be complemented with a petrological and mineralogical description of the rocks (by automated quantitative mineralogy and/or optical microscopy) in
the future to build up a more quantitative link of petrophysical properties and the mineralogy
similarly to the FB94-4-5 (Lode et al., 2021).
