Abstract

An optimal dynamic pollutant movement monitoring network design methodology is proposed to address the issue of enhancing modeling accuracy when the hydrogeologic and hydrochemical data and concentration measurement data are sparse. The proposed methodology aims at tracking the pollutant plume movement by sequentially designing and then implementing an optimally designed monitoring network. Each design and its implementation is followed by a limited period of additional concentration measurements at the monitoring locations. This additional information is then used for a new design of a monitoring network. The efficiency of such a sequentially designed (dynamic) and implemented optimal monitoring network is evaluated by applying the proposed methodology to the Skrydstrup waste disposal site in South Jutland in Denmark. The limited performance evaluations demonstrate the potential utility of the proposed methodology.
