Enabling Temporary Geological CO2 Storage: Insights from the ConsenCUS Project

Abstract

With the Net Zero Industry Act now in place, there is now the framework to scale up solutions to tackle the CO2 emissions from hard-to-abate activities (such as iron/steel refining, cement, and waste processing…). In this context, the ConsenCUS project brings innovations in CO2 capture, conversion and storage. Focusing here on the last point, safe cyclic loading of CO2 into salt formations and saline aquifers for temporary storage has been investigated via laboratory and numerical simulations to provide relevant data for the coming CO2 clusters and networks in NW and SE Europe. The results present the storage capacity and recovery efficiency to estimate the possible injection/production rates with a focus on the role of geochemical interactions between the injected CO2, the formation water, and the reservoir rock at the Stenlille site in Denmark. Series of experimental work also studied the deformation mechanics.
