Abstract
The two map sheets described in this report cover an E-W trending zone across part of the East Greenland Caledonian fold belt. Most of the rock units exposed are crystalline meta-morphic rocks, which exhibit features of Archaean, Proterozoic and Caledonian age. Small areas of post-Caledonian sediments and volcanic rocks are preserved.
The oldest rock units are gneisses and granites of the mainly Archaean Flyverfjord infracrustal complex , which are overlain by the Krummedal supracrustal sequence. Both divisions have been folded and metamorphosed during Proterozoic and Caledonian orogenic episodes.
The broad zone of widely exposed migmatitic and granitic rocks making up the Gasefjord - Stauning Alper migmatite and granite zone is the product of intense orogenic activity of Proterozoic and Caledonian age ; Caledonian metamorphism locally reached granulite facies, and the abundant Caledonian intrusions include granite, monzonite, quartz diorite and syenite.
Post-Caledonian sedimentary rocks include the Carboniferous(?) - Permian Røde Ø conglomerate and Jurassic rocks at the west margin of the Jameson Land basin , while Tertiary volcanic rocks cap the highest peaks in much of the region.
