    Abstract

Microfossils and palynomorphs from the Freja Member were studied with the purpose to improve the understanding of the age and depositional setting of the unit. The fossil evidence shows that the Freja Member is of Chattian (Late Oligocene) age in Frida-I and Chattian (Late Oligocene) to probably early Aquitanian (earliest Miocene) age in Francisca-I. It is suggested that the palaeoenvironment changed from upper bathyal and outer neritic in the lower part of the Freja Member to neritic in the upper part in Francisca- I and that the significant influx of marginal marine and terrestrial palynomorphs and phytoclasts was caused by transportation from the neighbouring coastal areas.
