Description

The SACS - Work Area 1 (WP1) Geology: Regional geological mapping of the Utsira Fm centrered around the Sleipner Field area of the North Sea, where CO2 is stored, is part of the overall SACS project. The overall SACS project is a field-scale demonstration project, which aimed to describe, monitor and model geological and geochemical aspects related to injection of CO2 at the Norwegian Sleipner Field.
The research institution group comprise: GEUS, BGS, IKU, SINTEF, TNO, BRGM, IFP, the Nansen ERS Centre and the IEA Greenhouse Gas R & D Programme. The industry partnes (names at this time) include: Statoil, (coordinator), BP, ExxonMobil, Norsk Hydro, Saga Petroleum, TotalFinaElf, and Vattenfall.
The SACS project is financially supported by the EU Thermie programme. Statoil initiated CO2 storage in the Utsira Fm in 1996 and was the first field-scale  geological CO2 storage project in Europe.
