Resumé

In the western part of the Limfjord area a stratigraphic unit of glaciolacustrine clay has been investigated. Two localities, Nygård Hage and Toftum Bjerge have been selected for a general description.

According to glaciostratigraphic investigations the glaciolacustrine clay is found below a Warthe (Saale II) till and a younger unit of Weichselian meltwater deposits. The glaciolacustrine clay unit is correlated to late Elsterian age.

Sedimentological investigations indicate that the glaciolacustrine clay unit at Nygård Hage is deposited in the deeper wave dominated part of a glacial lacustrine basin, whereas at Toftum Bjerge distal delta deposits are found in addition to the glacial lacustrine clay. The glaciolacustrine clay unit is distributed over a large area of the western part of Jutland and may probably be used as a stratigraphically significant marker horizon.

A more precise distribution and a closer identification of the glaciolacustrine unit would be of great value in the understanding of the stratigraphy of the Quaternary.
