Resumé

This chapter outlines a conceptual framework to analyze the different roles that the insurance sector can play in relation to nature-based solutions (NBS) and to build resilience in the context of climate change and probable increased level of damages, considering the potential to mitigate water risks as eco-DRR and climate change adaptation. It introduces the concepts of assurance and insurance value of nature to then analyze the different roles (what we have termed the “five hats”) of the insurance sector, illustrating these different opportunities to engage the insurance sector into NBS to risk mitigation and adaptation with reference to concrete examples. The roles refer to (re)insurance as data owners, as investors, as innovators, and as insurance partners for managing risk to ensure the resilience and insurability of the system (including natural systems).
