Resumé
The latest Devonian (Fammenian) to late Permian (Kazanian) depositional epoch throughout this vast province was characterized by the development of three major sequences, with boundaries which reflect regional shifts in tectonic, hydrographic and climatic regimes. Upper Devonian to lower Carboniferous fluviatile and lacustrine sequences were deposited in humid conditions before and during early phases of rifting along major sutures in the region. Complex mid-Carboniferous successions display the interplay of active rifting, climatic change and rising sea-level; ongoing sea-level rise and progressively more quiescent tectonic regimes resulted in the regional development of late Carboniferous and early Permian carbonate and evaporite platforms. Short-term sea-level oscillations appear to be responsible for the development of cyclic sequences which can be correlated at several levels in and between these platform environments. Widespread mid-Permian sea-level rise was accompanied by marked changes in depositional style, reflecting major circum-Arctic palaeogeographical realignments and resulting in the third and final sedimentational phase in this epoch. -from Authors
