Resumé
This review provides an overview of recent advances in the removal of As in soil and microbial properties of soil due to application of biochar. Biochar has been widely used as an amendment for many different soils including As. Changes in soil physio-chemical properties may influence the As bioavailability and phytotoxicity. Contrasting results have been reported in terms of As mobility in soil due to changes in ions in soil solution, DOC, pH, CEC, P and etc. Despite the use of biochar as adsorbent is increasing, a number of research gaps and uncertainties still exist as identified in this review in terms of As. Thus more relevant investigations are needed in further research especially on ageing, mechanisms and enhancing adsorption capacities.
