Resumé
Discusses mathematical modelling for real time forecasting of floods, with emphasis on updating of the hydrological model. The MIKE 11 system is a PC based version of the mainframe based NAM-S11 modelling system. Outlines possible methods for updating and describes development of a new routine which can distinguish between amplitude and phase errors. The routing moves the simulated curve both along the time axis and the discharge axis until the best agreement between measured and simulated curves is given. The new updating model is better than the fully automatic error prediction model, though in some cases a semi automatic error prediction with some input from hydrologists may perform better than the new fully automatic expert system for updating.
