Guidance on geological modelling used in groundwater models

Geological modelling, though important, does generally not receive sufficient attention in most groundwater modelling projects. Based on this experience the Danish groundwater modelling community has initiated the development of a national set of guidelines on geological modelling. The first version of this guideline describes a recommended 4 step work process in geological modelling The four steps cover the initial project definition, he conceptual geological model, the geological model and finally the resulting hydrostratigraphic model, which is to be passed on to the groundwater modelling tool. The guidelines especially emphasise the importance of modelling being an itrative process, the importance of documentation, uncertainty assessment and the importance of quality assurance. The first set of guidelines is developed in a unique collaboration between otherwise competitive consultancies, the Danish Counties and Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. The project has helped raising awareness on the need of high quality geological models in groundwater modelling. The work is highly recommended to be continued towards a more complete and detailed descriptions of the geological modelling work process,
