Resumé

O-xylene showed a biphasic degradation pattern in degradation studies of mixtures of aromatic hydrocarbons. Groundwater from an uncontaminated aquifer was used as inoculum. The initial degradation of o-xylene was concomitant to the degradation of naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene. Subsequent addition of naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene resulted in further degradation of o-xylene. This indicates a cometabolic transformation of o-xylene with at least naphthalene as growth substrate.
