This project aims to provide information that can support the determination of principles and
criteria for decisions on when the aftercare period for a landfill may be terminated, and it further aims to provide proposals for and requirements on methods for site-specific assessments of whether or not such criteria have been met, i.e. whether or not a given landfill can be regarded as no longer
constituting a risk to the local environment. An overall methodology for estimating the duration of the aftercare period or assessing whether it will be safe to end the aftercare under various
conditions have been developed. The study have focused only on the production, quality, leaking
and subsequent transport and effect of leachate in the environment, since the quality and quantity of leachate as a function of time are expected to be more critical with respect to achievement of endstatus (i.e. “final storage quality” when the aftercare can be stopped) than e.g. gas formation and geotechnical stability (with the execption of possible stability problems caused the the so-called
“bathtub effect”).
The report provides an overall description of landfilling as it is carried out currently in Denmark, including a brief overview of the various types of waste and various types of classes of landfill units and the associated acceptance criteria which are listed in Statutory Order No. 1049/2013 on
Landfilling of Waste.
