Key Competencies
Scientific and Project leadership with research topics including: Seismic and structural interpretation and mapping including well data. Tectonostratigraphy. Sequence stratigraphy. Research with interpretation of structures for geological CO2 storage and geothermal energy. 25+ years experience from regional and prospect mapping projects, primary from onshore and offshore Denmark (e.g. CCS2022-2024), all of the offshore West Greenland continental margin, and the Norwegian North Sea (e.g. SACS - CO2 storage at Sleipner; CO2-Upslope, Skagerrak). Experience with International project cooperation including Uppsala University, Oslo University, British Geological Survey, Geological Survey of Canada, and with companies.
Selected Experience Record - Management of Research Projects and Assignments
- Main Project leader of the major CCS2022-2024 project to mature 8 geological structures onshore and offshore Denmark for potential CO2 storage by seismic acquisition and mapping. The project is a cooperation on seismic acquisition of 5 surveys onshore with Uppsala University (Sweden), and with BGR (Germany) and Aarhus University of one offshore survey. My main tasks included: Project management, organizing of the entire project and its sub-projects, planning and survey design of all onshore seismic surveys coordinated with Uppsala University - Coordination with UU while ongoing acquisition - Seismic interpretation, and reporting. The project was financed by the Funding of Higher Education in Denmark - Forskningsreserven (+100 mill DKK). Mapping also provided input and advise for the Danish Energy Agency on CCS exploration licensing rounds. The project follows up on the Danish Climate Strategy of 2021 on geological storage of CO2 in Denmark as one of the means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project is one of the largest public scientific seismic acquisition campaigns conducted in Denmark. Many university students (from Uppsala University, University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University) were part of the onshore field work and several Master and PhD projects are generated. Also, the project provides a significant research output with many publications (20 reports; 27 papers & extended abstracts, and +8 in prep) and several scientific presentations. Other presentations on the project include public information meetings prior to each of the seismic survey, an invited talk from Dansk Industri at the Grønne Gasdage conference in Fredericia (Sept., 2024) on the project, university lessons on the project, presentations at varius public arrangements incl. ScienceExpo, Kulturnatten, etc., all providing significant public outreach.
- Since 2013 mapping reservoirs for geothermal energy projects in Denmark, including Copenhagen, Aarhus, northern Sjælland and northern Jylland. The work (and funding) include research projects (incl. a EUDP geothermal research project in Copenhagen) and mapping for district heating companies and geothermal energy companies.
- Project leader of GEUS' mapping and compilation (2018-2021) of the West Greenland continental margin in the GEM2-project of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC): Geological synthesis of Baffin Island (Nunavut) and the Labrador– Baffin Seaway. The project was funded by GSC (GEUS' contribution by GSC and GEUS).
- Project leader with mapping (2005-2018) of all regions offshore West Greenland: e.g. Baffin Bay Update (2013-2015) & SW Greenland Update (2015-2017). Project results were used for both advising MMR for licensing rounds and as regional research (e.g. the GEM2 project with GSC). Funding mainly by MMR.
- Project leader (1999-2001) for regional mapping (Utsira Fm) of the SACS project (first phase) of CO2 storage at Sleipner (North Sea, Norway). The SACS project with several research institutions and energy companies was supported by the European Commission's Thermie Programme. CO2 storage in the Utsira Fm sandstones at the Sleipner Field is the first european industrial-scale project, which the operator (Statoil) started in 1996.
